This seminar focuses on the concept and category of “species” to interrogate and reimagine relationships between nonhuman and human lives. Informed by slow scholarship and close readings, we will discuss key texts in ecofeminism to examine how species-bound distinctions function to mediate and regulate interspecies interactions. Paying particular attention to how colonialism and capitalism have functioned as extractive regimes predicated on foundational nature/culture and non/human binaries, we will examine how queer, trans, and decolonial ecofeminist interventions have contested these binaries, as well as the speciesism, racism, sexism, and ableism they (re)enact. We will read work connecting the field of ecofeminism to the emerging field of multi/interspecies studies, including texts by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Max Liboiron, Mel Chen, Eva Hayward, Anna Tsing, and Donna Haraway. Students are encouraged to contribute actively to seminar discussions with their own experiences and positionalities to help us think critically and creatively about the relations we maintain with nonhuman lives and living worlds.
