The so-called New Testament, which became the fundamental text for Christian groups during the first centuries of the common era, is in many ways framed by Jewish tradition in its discussion of the one God of Israel, the expectation of the messiah, and the Jew Jesus as engaged in rabbinic debates. It is shaped by the sacred scriptures of Israel, by Jewish-Hellenistic traditions and norms, and the Jewish concepts of eschatology and apocalypticism. This course will explore selected passages from the New Testament in their Judaic contexts. What in their Jewish contexts were the authors of the New Testament responding to, changing, or developing further? What biblical texts, ritual practices, or socio-political realities? In exploring key sections of the New Testament and the surrounding thought-milieux we will look for concepts that explore the interrelationship between Judaisms and Christianities, to better understand the development of what became Christianity, and the “parting of the ways” of Judaisms and Christianities.
