This course will develop your ability to participate in legal discourse across a variety of contexts. Beginning with aspects of English civil law (contract and tort), we will proceed to look at different aspects of law in the related but distinct jurisdictions of Britain and Ireland (including legal documents, the professions, administrative law, and constitutional issues, amongst others). You will learn to employ legal reference materials such as statutes, case reports, and standard textbooks to analyse situations, and will use a range of audiovisual and written media as a basis to formulate and support arguments on contemporary legal issues. Throughout, we will emphasise the vocabulary required to communicate confidently and effectively in each area. Assessment will be on the basis of a presentation prepared for homework on a related topic of your choice and a final test in listening and writing.
