How to document deforestation, industreal pollution, or a melting glacier? This seminar examines how various artistic practices respond to environmental destruction and regeneration, and explores ways of seeing and listening. Focusing on audio-visual media projects that trace ecological change and its entanglements with social injustice, we ask how different sounding and imaging techniques can render environmental destruction perceptible, as well as lending itself as contributors to regenerative ecological practices.
Central to this approach is the recognition that the ecological crisis is not only a scientific problem but a cultural, and political one. In this sense, the lab—long associated with methods of the natural sciences when it comes to studying environmental phenomena—becomes a transdisciplinary space of inquiry: invited guest contributions by Berlin-based artists and researchers will offer insight into their audio-visual practices. Through a mix of readings, close analysis of artworks, and collective discussion, the Objektlabor becomes a space in which students will engage with different audio-visual techniques that respond to changing planetary conditions.
No prior knowledge is required — just curiosity, and a willingness to engage.
The seminar will be co-taught with Hanna Grzeskiewicz in English, although disussions in German are possible. Eaqually, the aural exam can be held in German if prefered. |
