Inhalt
Kommentar	This seminar explores how North American plays from the 20th and 21st centuries perform and interrogate categories of race and gender. Drawing from canonical and non-canonical plays, the course centers on performance as a site of identity formation, resistance, and reimagination. Emphasis will be placed on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and performance. In particular, we will look at the relationship between theories of performativity (Butler et al.), the performance of particular texts, and the practice of performance on the stage. Analyses of plays as well as creative exercises and assignments will give future teachers a toolbox both for the understanding of performance and the teaching of plays. If possible, a theater visit will be part of the course.
