As one of the most distinctive human traits, communication presents a developmental puzzle. While it appears to be a complex cognitive task, infants begin communicating remarkably early. This course explores this puzzle from a philosophical and theoretical perspective. We will review infants' communicative abilities, including pointing, first words, pretense, and symbolic understanding, and examine how different theoretical frameworks account for them and whether they provide a satisfactory explanation.
