The accusation of anti-Semitism leveled against various groups, organizations, and individuals is gaining increasing significance in political and societal realms between the Global north and the Global south. Understanding the historical roots of these developments, the socio-political processes shaping their interpretation, and the local and global contexts in which they unfold are pivotal issues in contemporary German society. This phenomenon is critically referred to as the ‘new anti-Semitism’ discourse. The ‘new anti-Semitism’ discourse is deployed to target LGBTIQA+ bodies, people of color, especially migrant, Palestinian, Muslim, and some Jewish bodies as agents of anti-Semitism in the framework of a transnational racial governance. In this epistemic regime some bodies are seen as ‘at home’ while others are thought to have imported anti-Semitism into a ‘post-racial and sexually free’ Germany.
This course, which outlines the emerging field of critical studies on ‘new anti-Semitism’, deals with knowledge production on race, religion, class, gender and nation from the prism of the ‘new anti-Semitism' discourse in Germany, Europe and transnationally, adopting methods from critical migration studies, critical religion studies, queer-feminist studies, anthropology, critical terror studies and culture studies. The students will gain tools for critical readings of discourses of gender, race and religion in the global north and the global south as well reflect on their own positionality in regards to these discussions. Active participation, reading texts and engaging with real-life examples are expected to ensure a dynamic learning experience with these contemporary phenomena.
