This course explores theoretical frameworks, case studies, and critical discussions to understand the complexities of sexuality and sexual politics in a globalized yet increasingly polarized world. The course will critically engage with sexuality and sexual politics in relation to colonialism, Orientalism, migration, citizenship, and nationalism, as well as theories of transnationalism and globalization. By examining case studies from different political contexts, students will critically explore the key paradigmatic divides sharping queer transnationalism(s) —such as local versus global, East versus West, tradition versus modernity, South versus North, and secular versus religious. The course will also discuss the emerging tensions surrounding queer transnationalism, including the questions of war, anti-intellectualism, deglobalization, populist nationalism, and far-right mobilizations against minorities and marginalized groups. The course will include interactive components including field trips to Berlin museums and events, film screenings, and guest lectures from experts.
