This seminar examines the rise of alternative education and its connection to middle-class parents' school choices and educational strategies. Against the backdrop of growing global competition and educational inequalities, various forms of alternative education have gained increasing popularity. Alternative education encompasses traditional models, such as Waldorf and Montessori schools, and newer initiatives that have emerged in recent decades such as forest schools, human-scale schools, and innovative schools. The central focus of this seminar is on cases of alternative education in China, complemented by comparisons with the development of alternative education in other cultural and social contexts. Additionally, the seminar explores how alternative education serves as a tool to secure middle-class advantage and examines its broader implications for societal structures and inequalities. The sessions, utilizing key texts in English, are organized in diverse formats, including lectures, case studies, group discussions, and student presentations.
The course will be conducted entirely in English, and proficiency in English is essential for successful participation.
