Frantz Fanon has been on everyone's lips again for some time now. More than sixty years after his death, the influence of his writings from the seminar room to social media to the streets is considerable. At the same time, it seems that the frequency of references to Fanon goes hand in hand with an often superficial reading of his writings. In this seminar, we will read some of his key texts against the backdrop of his work as a psychiatrist and political activist and critically examine Fanon's relevance to the discussion of decolonization and postcolonialism.
Frantz Fanon ist seit geraumer Zeit wieder in aller Munde. Über sechzig Jahre nach seinem Tod ist der Einfluss seiner Schriften vom Seminarraum über die sozialen Medien bis hin zu den Straßen beträchtlich. Zugleich drängt sich der Eindruck auf, dass die Häufigkeit der Referenzen an Fanon mit einer oft oberflächlichen Lektüre seiner Schriften einhergeht. In diesem Seminar wollen wir einige seiner zentralen Schriften vor dem Hintergrund seiner Tätigkeit als Psychiater und politischer Aktivist lesen und Fanons Relevanz für die Diskussion von Dekolonisation und Postkolonialismus kritisch prüfen.
