Meta-analysis in Sociology - Detailseite

This course aims to equip students with the necessary skills to summarize empirical literature in sociology. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part, students learn to search for, critically read, and evaluate research articles. Furthermore, they practice extracting relevant information from quantitative research presentations, such as regression tables. The use of systematic reviews to summarize multiple articles is also introduced. In the second part, students learn to conduct a meta-analysis, which involves synthesizing previous research findings numerically. They gain practical experience through hands-on exercises and, under the instructor’s guidance, they ultimately conduct and write their own meta-analysis on a topic of their choice. A basic understanding of hypothesis testing with univariate and bivariate statistics, as well as linear and logistic regression, is essential for the successful completion of the course. The seminar will be conducted in English.
