1 Kursinhalt
The seminar provides an introduction to the fundamentals of elite sociology, applying these concepts to analyze elite formation in Mainland Southeast Asia, and beyond. Following the principle of “studying up”—shifting attention from marginalized groups or those socially proximate to researchers to fields of power that may seem inaccessible or have been traditionally overlooked in the social sciences—the course explores the historical development of power structures, the interconnectedness of elites with global networks and influences, as well as their social structures and patterns of conflict. While the primary focus is on case studies from Southeast Asia, elite sociology has traditionally concentrated on Europe and the Americas. The seminar’s emphasis on methods for studying elites should also be relevant to students with interests in other regions.
