Das Seminar widmet sich den verschiedenen Methoden des Sprachvergleichs sowie den Klassifikationen, die sich aus diesen Ansätzen ergeben. Der Fokus liegt auf den Sprachen Afrikas, wo frühe Ansätze zur Sprachklassifikation untrennbar mit der kolonialen Geschichte verbunden sind und wissenschaftliche Fortschritte sehr lange behindert haben. Die Kursinhalte können aber bei Bedarf auch anhand von Sprachen in Asien behandelt werden. Die verschiedenen Ansätze beziehen sich hauptsächlich auf die Einteilung von Sprachen nach ihrer genealogischen Verwandtschaft in Sprachfamilien durch die historisch-vergleichende Linguistik, die Zuordnung von Sprachen zu geographischen Sprachbünden durch die Areallinguistik, und schließlich den Vergleich von Sprachen unabhängig ihrer genealogischen und geographischen Position durch die Sprachtypologie. Dabei werden sowohl die problematische Forschungsgeschichte als auch wichtige Themen des jetzigen Forschungsstands Berücksichtigung finden.
The seminar deals with different methods of language comparison and the types of linguistic classifications that arise thereof. The focus is on the languages of Africa, where early approaches to language classification are intricately intertwined with the colonial history and hampered scientific progress for a long time. If required, the course content can also be applied to the languages of Asia. The different approaches concern notably the division of languages into language families according to their genealogical relationship by means of the historical-comparative method, the allocation of languages to linguistic areas by means of areal and contact linguistics, and finally the comparison of languages independently of genealogical and geographical affinity by means of linguistic typology. The course deals both with the problematic history of science in this domain as well as important issues in the current scientific debates.
