This course is an advanced survey class on a) aspects of US movie history, b) film techniques, and c) some seminal texts of film theory. We will look at some of the major steps in the development of US cinema and discuss seminal movies from a variety of genres, for example western, musical and melodrama. We will discuss influential film theories, for example by Walter Benjamin, Laura Mulvey, and Linda Williams as well as selected chapters from an introduction into film theory by Thomas Elsaesser and Malte Hagener. Lastly, and we will have a look at basic filmic techniques such as image and shot, perspective, and editing, just to anme a few examples. Reading will be made available on Moodle and the films are available in the Mediothek. Assignments will include two brief written responses to two films.
