“The Fifth Wall - Navina Sundaram. Inside views of an outsider or outside views of an insider” is the title of an online archive created in collaboration with the Indian journalist, documentary film director and author Navina Sundaram who lived and worked in Germany for many decades. Among other things, the archive provides access to Sundaram's critical reports on topics such as refugees, asylum and migration, feminism, discrimination or abortion, but also to many of her personal letters as well as her own television reports and documentary films. In this seminar, we will first address the question of the potential of curated and/or alternative online archives for area, global as well as gender studies research. Building on this, participants will use the available sources in this archive to pursue a question of their own choosing and develop their topic for their oral presentation and MAP essay/term paper in this seminar. If possible, interested participants should register before the start of the course and take an initial virtual tour of the online archive: https://die-fuenfte-wand.de/de
Interested participants will have the opportunity to take part in a COIL unit as part of this seminar and have it recognized with credit points. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an approach to bring together students across countries and cultures to learn, discuss and collaborate as part of an established class at two (or more) institutions. Students are brought together across borders to tackle an assignment in teams. This form of virtual collaboration fosters digital and methodological skills for both students and teachers, and further promotes cultural insight and mutual understanding.
