Against the background of a growing body of publications with a queer sinophone perspective, for example by Howard Chiang, Alvin K. Wong, Ting-Fai Yu, Jamie Zhao, Hongwei Bao, Ari Heinrich, Zoran Lee Pecic, Fran Martin and Elisabeth L. Engebretsen, this course will introduce this specific scholarly perspective and related field of research. Besides a discussion of its theoretical perspective, it will include the analysis of case studies from the PRC, Hongkong, Taiwan, Malaysia and other sinophone diasporas. Contestations of social and cultural (gender) norms and socio-political change in these different geographical locations will be traced via transnational flows of narratives, social and cultural practices as well as their specific local versions and contexts.
