The course introduces students to recent research fields and core debates in area and new area studies and provides an overview of central thematic, theoretical, methodological and epistemological approaches. Based on the seminar readings we will discuss relevant approaches from post- and decolonial, transregional, migration and diaspora research.
Students attending this course acquire
· knowledge of core concepts and debates in area studies
· a basic understanding of the multi-disciplinary character of area studies
· basic knowledge of New Area Studies theory and methodology
The coursework includes writing a response paper and preparing a short presentation of a selected monograph.
Deutsche Zusammenfassung: Der Kurs führt Studierende in aktuelle Forschungsfelder und Kerndebatten in den Regionalstudien ein und bietet einen Überblick über zentrale thematische, theoretische, methodische und erkenntnistheoretische Ansätze des Faches.
