Abdel-Rahman Gruppe 1: Large Language Models and human cognition
With easily accessible interfaces like ChatGPT, Large Language Models (LLMs) have become a mainstream topic. At the same time, research on these models has seen a veritable explosion. In this seminar, we will first take a detailed look at how these models work. At their core, LLMs are complex neural network architectures that are trained to predict words in a context. We will review some of their historical predecessors that apply a similar rationale, as well as the neural network architecture in general. While this course will discuss these topics more at a conceptual than a detailed technical level, these sessions will still allow us to take a more informed look at how these models operate. In the second part of the course, we will then review very recent studies that use LLMs to study cognition, or vice versa, that apply methods from cognitive psychology to understand LLMs. This field is currently very much in flux and highly dynamic, so we will explore deep controversies and bold claims. We will conclude the seminar with some ethical and societal-level discussions about our future with LLMs.Rückfragen an: fritz.guenther@hu-berlin.de
