For people who grew up in religious environments, the decision to leave religion often denotes a discontinuity or even a break with the past. As an act of reversed conversion, the decision to leave religion behind is often accompanied by doubts and fears, but also with enthusiasm and hopes. The course will examine the phenomenon of leaving religion from different angles - philosophical, theological, and sociological. With particular reference to Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, we will explore topics such as losing faith (or actively ignoring it), finding a new world (which is not always entirely secular), developing a posture toward the past (which continues to haunt the present), opposing God (or being His loyal opposition), and living dialectically between opposing universes. The aim of the course is to re- and de-construct the road taken by those who have left religion - a twisting road whose unknown end always stands between redemption and damnation. |
