This course will explore the Jewish experience of Berlin in the past and in the present. In 4 days, we will visit the city’s contemporary Jewish centers, and become acquainted with the major challenges that Jewish communities face in Berlin today. We will walk and talk about immigration, politics, food, Muslim-Jewish relations, religion, and antisemitism, as well as have a close look into the city’s rich memorial culture and the ways in which the tragic past is worked out in it. The course will include conversations with leading Jewish activists, artists, and leaders in the city, as well as visits to synagogues, museums, and other central Jewish sites. |
