Paul Thek asks us to ask ourselves, “What does it mean in the beginning was the word”? The context for this question is Thek’s “Teaching Notes”, a somewhat enigmatic document consisting of 52 questions that prompt the reader to probe a wide spectrum of inquiry and experience in their work. The questions were given to his students at The Cooper Union in 1980 and in this 4 day workshop we will contemplate Thek’s set of questions and more broadly the idea that art might manifest as an answer to practical, metaphysical or philosophical questioning. Participants will be asked to write their own set of questions and then answer them materially, through three and/or four dimensions (sculpture in the “expanded field”). Any kind of tools and materials can be used. The challenge will be to work nimbly and within the given restraints of space and time.
The course will be held in English.
