This seminar aims to provide a basic understanding of African languages and linguistics. We will begin with a brief overview of sound and writing systems, morphology, and syntax. We will then delve into the four large groups of African languages, namely Afroasiatic, Niger-Kordofanian, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan, as well as some specific big languages. Finally, we will cover social and other external aspects of language, such as variation (“dialects”, “registers”), multilingualism, and language policy. To ensure that you get the most out of the course, we request that you read one basic text from the introduction by Webb & Kembo-Sure (2000) per session. There will be an examination at the end of the course.
