Between the 1960s and the 1980s, Christian Churches have profoundly changed the traditional Christian attitude to Judaism. After centuries of mutual hostility, these sworn religious rivals seemed ready to open a new chapter in their stormy story. Yet what are the materials of which this historical change is made?
The course focuses on the transformation of Christian-Jewish relations from the 1960s to the present. Special attention would be given to challenges, problems and obstacles: assymetries, different political entanglements, awkward scilences, and double standards. We will also focus on the current controvercies between and among Jews and Christians, for example with regards to the question of Christian mission, of supersessionism, of the theological meaning of the Land and State of Israel, and of the place of polemic in contemporary Jewish-Christian relations. The course will explore these topics in the mirror of key texts, declarations and dialogue documents of recent decades. |
