Feminism & Intersectionality: Latin American Approaches
What historical happenings generated the differences between women in Latin America? What do they have in common? What is the discourse around women in lands like Brazil, Costa Rica, and Argentina, and how do they try to deconstruct that, how do they resist? What are the feminisms in Latin America that are celebrated, and which ones are usually put in the margins? What is the role of the subcontinent in intersectional feminism? These are some of the many questions we want to explore in this seminar. We will discuss and emphasize the plurality Western feminist discourse generally overlooks when debating gender-specific and intertwining oppressions, implementing an intersectional approach. We will put our heads together to think about topics like violence against women, the role of religion and the patriarchy in generating the imagery of the female body, political participation, colonial, racial, and class relations, marginalization of the LGBTIQ+ community, violence against women, and sex work and prostitution in Latin America. |
