Jewish-Christians relations cannot be comprehended without tackling their ancient roots. At the same time, it is clear that contemporary processes are not simply modern expressions of the ancient debates. Therefore, a double look is required in order to account for these issues: ancient roots on the one hand, their modern metamorphoses on the other hand.
The course is meant to offer this double look. We will tackle a series of fundamental topics in Jewish-Christian relations. We shall dedicate two lessons to each topic: one concentrating on the ancient texts and the other on contemporary expressions. Each lesson will combine readings of primary literature, scholarly debates and contemporary theological conversations. We will discuss issues such as: Paul and Paulinism: New Perspective and beyond; Christianity in the Talmud: omnipresent or nowhere to be found?; The Ways the Never Parted? late antique history and contemporary debates; Polemicists: Ancient and New, and the contemporary reverberations of the Augustinian legacy of the Jewish Witness. |
