The program to determine the Neural Correlate emerged in the late 1990s when it became clear that a high level of interdisciplinary cooperation was essential for making progress in our understanding of consciousness, although the theoretical disagreements appeared almost unsurmountable. Setting the theoretical controversies aside in order to focus on simple neuroscientific data could therefore appear as an attractive and tractable intermediate goal. Today, twenty years later, it is time to take stock. We will read the original program as it has been set up by David Chalmers, discuss successes and failures, and will try to give an outlook on possible future developments. |
