By providing students with analytical tools relevant for the understanding of literature from select regions of Southern Africa, this course will explore the rich historical, social, and cultural contexts that have informed Southern African literature. While examining the developments in literary forms beginning with oral literature, part of the course will dwell on texts that engage politics, gender relations, masculinity, and sexuality as a way to delve into debates that have contributed to the trend in Southern African literature and the transformation of society particularly when social and cultural realities are evoked. With these topics in mind, interpreting selected texts shall depend on narratology and semiotics as methods that will help the students to critically evaluate the texts. |
