This seminar will explore the topic of the "Global Renaissance," focusing on Europe's relations with Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East in an early era of colonization and exploration. The seminar will consider relationships between European visual arts (not only painting, sculpture, and architecture but also maps, textiles, and ceramics) and the expansion of global trade and cultural contacts between the 15th and 17th centuries. Topics to be considered include cultural transfer, artistic representations of 'the other', and the impact of newly imported materials and objects. A study of the 'Global Renaissance' will also involve exploring the methodology of art history, questioning why global and intercultural connections have traditionally not been taken into account in the study of Renaissance art. |
