Object Work: The Sculptural Imagination in American Art addresses the history of modern sculpture from the early twentieth century to the present. The course investigates the key debates, figures and outliers that have shaped the sculptural imagination over the past two centuries. Artists discussed will include Marcel Duchamp, Baroness Elsa von Freytag Loringhoven, Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, Lynda Bengalis, Noah Purifoy, Senga Nengudi, Tamara Henderson among many others. We will interrogate the transformative procedures of sculptural work — molding, casting, assemblage — but also explore the unique bodily and temporally specific demands the object places on the viewer. The seminar will include a number of extended visits to exhibitions in and around Berlin. |
