The Biogeography Colloquium provides a space for students writing their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis with us. Students present and get feedback on their work, discuss problems they may encounter and learn about ongoing work led by PhD students and Postdoc in the lab. The colloquium also a space for prospective students to develop ideas for possible future theses topics, and a friendly forum for improving presentation and communication skills.
All Bachelor’s or Master’s theses students are required to present their work at least twice, once in the initial conceptualization phase (short flashtalk presentation – 5-10min, maximum 10 slides) to highlight the overarching ideas and goal of their thesis, and once at a stage when first results are available (~15-20mins, followed by a discussion). The aim of these presentations is to provide Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis students with constructive feedback and with opportunities to critically discuss methodological and thematic aspects of their projects with a wide range of peers (fellow students, PhD students, postdocs and faculty members).
All students writing a thesis with the Conservation Biogeography group are expected to participate actively and regularly in the colloquium. As the working language of the group is English, the presentations and discussion in the colloquium will be in English as well. |
