This seminar takes up and deepens the knowledge of fundamentals of language variation (as presented in the lecture) and demonstrates the interplay of linguistically relevant forces in exo- and endoglossic linguistic situations using essential features of the dialects and sociolects of English in the USA and Canada. Thus it discusses the emergence and historic development of the major regional varieties in both countries. This is complemented by the exploration of socio-regional and socio-ethnic varieties (urban dialects; African American English and Hispanic American English). |
